Biographical History
Frederick Knab (1865-1918), born in Bavaria, emigrated to the United States in 1873 with his parents. He subsequently returned to Munich to study art for a time. Entomology was also one of Knab's early interests. Coupled with his artistic skill, this interest earned him a commission from Leland Ossian Howard to study the mosquitoes of New England as part of a larger study then in progress on the mosquitoes of North and Central America. In 1906 Knab joined the Bureau of Entomology of the United States Department of Agriculture, where he continued his studies of disease-bearing Diptera until his death.
