Biographical History

The Pennsylvania Radiological Society began as the Roentgen Ray Society of Central Pa. organized in Altoona, Pa. in May 1916. The Society's founders were Doctors G. D. Bliss, W. A. Reily, and Harry W. Stewart. The purpose of the society was to discuss issues related to X-Ray diagnosis and X-Ray/or radium treatment. The society was also used as a social meeting place for doctors and physicians of radiology. The society's membership rose steadily into the 1920s because of the increase of professionals practicing radiology. Membership spread from central Pennsylvania to include cities like Pittsburgh and Williamsport, Pa. In 1929 at the 14th annual Fall meeting the society's name was changed to the Pennsylvania Radiological Society in order to involve all of the state. In the 1930s the society expanded its concentration on radiology to include nuclear medicine. In 1969 the society was recognized as a chapter of the American College of Radiology. The society's publication, The Pennsylvania Journal of Radiology, ran from 1933-1950 until its name was changed to The Bulletin of the Pennsylvania Radiological Society in 1951. the American College of Radiology.
