Blaxland, Gregory, 1778-1853

Gregory Blaxland was influenced by Sir Joseph Banks in his decision to emigrate to Sydney in 1805. The Government promised land, convict servants and free passage to 'Settlers of responsibility and capital', and Blaxland arrived on the 'William Pitt' with his wife, three children, two servants, an overseer, sheep, seed, bees, tools, groceries and clothing. Blaxland speculated on agricultural and pastoral activities. Seeking a solution to pastoralist's land problems, in 1810 he had explored part of the Nepean River. In 1813 he requested Governor Macquaries' approval for an exploring expedition across the Blue Mountains, and set out with William Lawson and W. C. Wentworth.
