Biographical History

Duncan G. (Duncan Grainger) McRae (1808-1889) was a steamboat agent at Wilmington, N.C.; president of the Fayetteville and Western Railroad; and justice of the peace of Cumberland County, N.C. He was also involved with the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a fraternal organization. During the Civil War McRae was imprisoned by the United States military at Fort Macon. His father Duncan McRae was a businessman, postmaster, and banker of Fayetteville, N.C.
