Biographical History
Captain Evan P. Howell (1839-1905) was born December 10, 1839 in Warsaw, Georgia. In 1861 he married Julia Adelaide Erwin (1843-1906) in South Carolina. Julia was born January 17, 1843 in Erwinton, South Carolina and was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Erwin. The couple had seven children: Clark, Albert, Rosalie, Evan, Ida, Effie, and Adelaide. After he married, Howell served in the Civil War as Captain of Light Artillery Howell's Company of the Georgia Battery in Hardee's Corps. When he returned from service, Howell practiced law and operated his own lumber company until 1876 when he became publisher of the Atlanta Constitution. Howell remained publisher of the paper until his death in 1905.
