Biographical History

Ethelbert Stewart (1857-1936) of Illinois was a pioneer in the field of labor statistics. A longtime employee of the United States Labor Department, Stewart also founded and edited labor newspapers. He served as the commissioner of labor for Illionis, chief of the United States Labor Bureau, chief of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1920-1932, and statistical advisor to the United States Tariff Board.
