Biographical History

Pittsylvania County was named in honor of William Pitt, earl of Chatham, a great English statesman. It was formed from Halifax County in 1766.

The board of supervisors has been the chief administrative body of the county since its establishment. The board's duties are fixed by statute and are primarily concerned with maintenance and construction of county buildings and fiscal matters.
