Biographical History

The Bartram Trail Conference was formally founded on 4 Nov. 1976 as a nonprofit organization to "study, promote, construct, and maintain a continuous, multipurpose trail" commemorating William Bartram, " the first native-born naturalist-artist of the American colonies."

Established through the concerted efforts of the governors of the eight southeastern states through which Bartram traveled, the Conference goals were eventually broadened to include the study, preservation, and interpretation of Bartram's "significant contributions of America's natural and cultural heritage." The headquarters of the Conference was located in Montgomery.
