Biographical History
Friends of the North Golf Course (FNGC), was founded in 1986 as an Albuquerque, NM based citizen action group dedicated to preserving 96 acres of University of New Mexico land as an open and undeveloped recreational area. They lobbied both the UNM administration and New Mexico Legislature for planned development in the area that would protect the flora and fauna and preserve the greenspace. In addition to their activities on behalf of the north golf course, FNGC was the catalyst for the founding of Albuquerque's Federation of University Neighborhoods (FUN). FNGC disbanded in 1993 when the UNM administration withdrew its cooperation in the Barren Fairways restoration and beautification project.
Friends of the North Golf Course (FNGC), was founded in 1986 as an Albuquerque, NM based citizen action group dedicated to preserving 96 acres of University of New Mexico land as an open and undeveloped recreational area. FNGC studied land use, polled north golf course users, and sponsored nature walks and trash pick up days. They lobbied both the UNM administration and New Mexico Legislature for planned development in the area that would protect the flora and fauna and preserve the greenspace.
At the height of its activities, FNGC had over 400 members from the greater Albuquerque area. They administered a large Urban Enhancement Trust Fund grant to restore and beautify the undeveloped Barren Fairways area of the golf course.
