Biographical History
The Ames Library of South Asia was donated to the University of Minnesota in 1952 by Charles Lesley Ames, former vice president of West Publishing Company. The donation consisted of over 25,000 books, maps, charts, photographs and related materials pertaining to India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and other south Asian areas, with particular emphasis in the interaction of Britain and India. Ames compiled his library over 45 years of travel to the region. The library came into the University's physical possession in 1961 and was administered by Henry Scholberg, first librarian for the collection.
