Kentucky physician, medical professor, and botanist.
Biographical note: Charles Wilkins Short was born in Woodford County, Kentucky. He earned a bachelor's degree from Transylvania University in 1811 and studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania where he developed an interest in botany. In 1825 he joined the faculty of the medical department at Transylvania as professor of materia medica and medical botany. Short left Transylvania in 1838 to join the faculty of the Louisville Medical Institute. He published more than thirty works on botany and is credited with promoting the study of the flora of the region.

Charles Wilkins Short of Hayfield (near Louisville), Ky., was a physician, noted botanist, professor of medicine at Transylvania University and the Medical College of Louisville.

Short was born in Woodford Co., Ky., and attended the Joshua Fry School in Mercer County, Ky., before receiving a degree from Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky. After studying medicine and botany at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Short began practicing medicine, first in Lexington and then in Hopkinsville, Ky. In 1865, Dr. Short accepted the professorship of Materia Medicine at Transylvania University. He served there until 1838 when he accepted a similar position at Louisville Medical Institute (which became the University of Louisville in 1849). In 1849 Dr. Short retired from active teaching and continued his botanical studies.
