Biographical History
Jeremy Taylor, a writer of religious tracts, was born in Cambridge, England. He took religious orders and went to Cambridge University, graduating with an M.A. Due to his religious beliefs and his support of the King during the time of the Puritans, he spent time in prison and was obliged to take refuge periodically in Wales. After his last period of imprisonment in England, he accepted a position in north- east Ireland, but was persecuted and arrested at the instigation of the Presbyterians. Upon the restoration of the monarchy, however, he was consecrated Bishop of Down and Conner and given oversight of the small diocese of Dromore. He also became a member of the Irish Privy Council. He is buried in the cathedral at Dromore.
