Biographical History

Henry S. Kaiser (1890-1949), born in Seneca, Kansas, came to Alaska in 1912 as a soldier in the U.S. Signal Corps. He was a telegraph and wireless operator, lineman, and electrician, and installed many of the early Alaskan wireless stations. He eventually settled in Nenana, Alaska, where he owned the local power plant. First elected mayor of Nenana in 1937, he served several terms in that position. He died of a heart attack in January 1949 while helping to fight a fire that threatened the Nenana business district. (From obituary, Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, 7 January 1949, p. 8.)
