Biographical History
Agencies of the Southern Baptist Convention created charters in an effort to establish their authority, purpose, organizational structure and governmental requirements.
At 1992 annual session of the Southern Baptist Convention, James L. Holly proposed a resolution recommending a study of Freemasonry. Holly believed that the principles and rituals of Freemasonry made it incompatible with the Southern Baptist faith. Conducted by the Interfaith Witness Department, the study concluded that membership in Masonic Lodges should be an individual choice, in concurrence with Baptist principles.
The annual meetings of the Southern Baptist Convention is moderated by elected officers. The President of the Convention gives a presidential address/sermon to the messengers at the annual meeting. Officers of the Convention are elected at each meeting.
The 1922 meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention instructed the Sunday School Board and the Home Mission Board to survey "country church conditions and needs" and report on its findings. The survey included data on 19,185 country churches.
The survey was conducted over the years 1922-1923 and resulted in a report to the 1924 meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention.
