Biographical History

Eduard Gans (1798-1839) was a jurist and professor of law in Berlin. Together with Leopold Zunz he founded the Society for Jewish Culture and Science in 1819. He was a disciple of Hegel and converted to Christianity in 1825.

Edward Gans (1887-1991) was a banker in Germany. After he immigrated to the US he became a dealer of ancient coins and fine arts of various kinds. He donated his coin collection together with an archive containing book publications on seals and similar objects, sets of archaeological magazines, and his correspondence with experts in various fields to the Department of Near Eastern Studies of the University of California at Berkeley.
