Biographical History
Before a building can be constructed, a plan must be made. Thus, architectural renderings are made of a potential building to give its audience a chance to see what the finished product would look like. In the current era of 3D animation and computer graphics, the University Building Renderings Collection highlights the period of the two dimensional freehand artist who, with watercolors and canvas, brings life to the barely born Florida Technological University.
The man responsible for the architecture being built on FTU’s campus was Forrest M. Kelley, the Florida Board of Regents architect. With the help of Associated University Architects, Kelley gathered renderings, building plans, and material inventories from around the country to prepare for the construction of FTU. Of the architects and artists who assisted Kelley, only a few have work featured in this collection. Those artists and architects include M. McTammany Del.; Jim Squires, Inc.; Associated University Architects; Murphy, Hunton, and Shivers, presently called HuntonBrady; Richard Lewis; and the Worthington Associates, based in Kansas. HuntonBrady has continued working for the university, recently as the architects responsible for the current Communications Building. M. McTammany did several renderings for this university as contracted by Jim Squires, Inc., however only a few of the renderings were signed by the artist. It should not be assumed that M. McTammany was the artist for the remainder of the unsigned Jim Squires, Inc. work. More recent buildings, such as Health and Public Affairs feature the work of the architectural firm Schenkel Shultz. The artist A. Ottich, who created the watercolor of The Burnett House, is also featured.
