Born 1913; educated at Hertford College, Oxford University; on staff of Chatham House, 1936-1938 and 1946-1949; Assistant Master, Haileybury College, 1938-1941; on staff of Nuffield College Colonial Research, Oxford University, 1941-1946; Journalist, The Observer , 1946-1947; Reader in International Relations, LSE, 1949-1961; Member of Council, Royal Institute of International Affairs, 1952-1972; Visiting Professor, University of Chicago, 1956-1957; Professor of History, University of Sussex, 1961-1972; Dean, School of European Studies, 1961-1969; died 1972.
