Biographical History
Agent of the Connecticut Land Company who led a survey party into the Western Reserve in 1798 and founded Poland, Ohio. He moved his family there in 1803. He also constructed the road from Youngstown to Grand River and surveyed Burton, Poland and Youngstown. He supported roads, schools and libraries in the area and became a judge and state senator.
Land agent for the Connecticut, Big Beaver, and Union land companies, and founder of Poland, Ohio. Kirtland owned almost 2,000 acres in the township named after him, although he never permanently resided there. Kirtland Township was an "equalizing" township used by the Connecticut Land Company to compensate for losses of those settlers or investors who received swampy or poor land throughout the Reserve.
