Biographical History

Daniel Bucknam Hawkes lived in Minot, Me., and in 1824, married Mary Chandler Gower. Mary died in 1837 leaving Daniel with four young children. As a tanner by trade, Daniel traveled often and therefore relied on family members to raise his children. His daughter, Mary Louise Hawkes (whose transcription of her diary is found in this collection) was given to her cousin, Dr. Horace A. Barrows and his wife, of Bolster's Mills (Harrison), Me., to be raised as their child. She later used the name (Mary) Louisa Hawkes Barrows. She taught school in Otisfield, Me., and eventually married Leander Dorman of Buckfield, Me. Horace A. Hawkes, son of Daniel B. Hawkes, moved to California in 1854 to pursue mining.

From the description of Hawkes family letters and diary, 1847-1907. (Maine Historical Society Library). WorldCat record id: 501826989
