Biographical History
The Fifth Street Merchants Association was formed in 1975 to serve needs of merchants in a neighborhood commercial center that was selected to participate in a revitalization program supported by the Economic Development Administration and the City of Philadelphia's Office of Housing and Community Development. Membership was made up mainly of Puerto Ricans and other Spanish-speaking business owners in the "Golden Block," centered in a Latino community at 2700-2900 N. Fifth Street.
