Biographical History

English chemist and founder of the Pharmaceutical Society.

From the description of Papers, 1840-1859, undated. (Duke University). WorldCat record id: 34992361

Jacob Bell, founder of the Pharmaceutical Society and patron of art, was born in London in 1810. At the age of 12, he was sent to be educated at a Friends school in Darlington. The pharmaceutical business, established by his father, gained an international reputation under Jacob's control. The movement to found a Pharmaceutical Society, as a means of protecting trading rights, began in 1841, and in 1843 was incorporated by royal charter. He was elected as M.P. for St. Albans in 1852, but was unsuccessful when he contested the Great Marlow seat in the general election of 1852, and the Marylebone constituency in 1852. Ill-health prevented him from continuing his parliamentary career and he died in 1859.
