Biographical History
Formed in 1838, the Fourth Universalist Society was organized under the name "Friends of the Final Restitution." Under the leadership of Rev. Edwin Hubbell Chapin from 1848-1880, the group took the title "Church of the Divine Paternity," and in 1967 the name changed to the Fourth Universalist Society in the City of New York. The present church building was dedicated in 1898. William Appleton Potter was the architect, Tiffany produced the Communion Table, and the Carnegie family donated the Whitfield Memorial Organ. Gothic stained glass windows were made by the English firm J. R. Clayton.
