Biographical History

The Office of the Housing Consultant was created by USWA president David McDonald in the summer of 1958 to provide advisory and consultative services to the international officers, district directors, staff representatives, and local union officers with regard to any matters concerning housing and urban renewal activities, including programs in the fields of planning and community development, and retirement housing. Roland M. Sawyer was the first housing consultant to the union, serving until his death (circa 1965). The Office of the Housing Consultant was absorbed into the USWA Legislative Department in 1965 with Alex Fuller as Consultant.
