Hungarian born, American illustrator of children's books.
Hungarian-born painter and illustrator who came to New York in 1939 & died in 1978,
best known in this country for his work on the popular Golden Book series for children.
Tibor Gergely was born August 3, 1900, in Budapest, Hungary. He briefly attended art school in Vienna and worked as a caricaturist and artist in Europe before coming to the United States in 1939. He began illustrating children's books in 1940. He continued to illustrate children's books, written by a variety of authors, and on different subjects, throughout his long career. In 1942 he began an association with Golden Books, but out by Simon and Schuster, that continued until his death. Gergely illustrated and wrote many books for them, a number of which dealt with his favorite subject, animals. In 1955 he received a Caldecott Honor for Wheel on the Chimney, written by Margaret Wise Brown, the story of a family of storks who nest on a wheel tied to a chimney. Throughout his career, Gergely's work was noted for its simplicity and bright colors, especially evident in his work for Golden Books. Gergely died in New York, New York on January 13 (or 12, sources vary), 1978.
