Biographical History
Francis Peloubet Farquhar was a conservationist, mountaineer, author, and historian. He was also a long-time member of the Sierra Club.
Nicholas Clinch (1930- ) is regarded as one of America's most successful expedition leaders. He led the first ascent of Gasherbrum I in 1958 (an expedition recounted in his A Walk in the Sky: Climbing Hidden Peak, 1982) and Masherbrum in 1960. Clinch also led the 1966-67 expedition to Antarctica that resulted in the first ascent of Mount Vinson, the continent's highest peak.
In 2006, Nicholas Clinch received the American Alpine Club Gold Medal, a lifetime achievement award for contributions to the American Alpine Club and mountaineering. The American Alpine Club Library in Golden, Colorado, will house his 28,000-volume collection, which focuses on Central Asia.
