Biographical History

Dr. Robert N. Butler was born in New York City on Jan. 21, 1927. He attended Columbia University, where he received a B.A. degree in 1949 and an M.D. in 1953. His long career in gerontology and psychiatry has included association in various capacities with the National Institute of Mental Health, the Washington School of Psychiatry, the National Institute on Aging, the Howard University School of Medicine, the George Washington University School of Medicine, the District of Columbia Advisory Committee on Aging, the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging, and many others. Dr. Butler has written, edited, or contributed to, numerous monographs and periodicals dealing with aging. He was awarded the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for general non-fiction for his book Why survive? Being old in America. His marriage to Diane McLaughlin ended in divorce, and in 1975 he married Myrna Lewis, with whom he has co-authored several books. Dr. Butler is the father of three daughters from his first marriage.
