Biographical History

The Office of Executive Vice President was established in late 1968 as the University of Alabama in Birmingham moved towards independence from the main campus in Tuscaloosa. Dr. Joseph F. Volker served as the only executive vice president. He served in this position until June 1969 when UAB became an autonomous institution and Dr. Volker its president. As executive vice president, Volker continued the duties he had held as vice president for Birmingham affairs. He oversaw the administration of the campus including the College of General Studies and the Medical Center. This Office of the Executive Vice President has no relation to the Office of the Executive Vice President established by UAB President J. Claude Bennett in 1993.

From the description of Administrative Files of Executive Vice President Joseph F. Volker 1968-1969. (Mervyn H. Sterne Library - UAB). WorldCat record id: 31025751
