Biographical History
John Prentiss (1778-1873), founder and editor of the New Hampshire Sentinel in Keene, N.H., was the son of Rev. Caleb Prentiss (1747-1803) and Pamela Mellen (1750-1823) of Reading, Massachusetts. John had assisted his brother Charles Prentiss (1774-1820), the founder of the Rural Repository in Leominster, Mass., before establishing the New Hampshire Sentinel in 1799. John was also a publisher and bookseller, town clerk and treasurer, state representative in 1820 and state senator in 1838. Prentiss retired as editor in 1847 and thereafter wrote frequently for the Portsmouth Journal.
