Biographical History

Hugh McDonald was born and lived in Glasgow. He was apprenticed as a block engraver, but his literary gifts helped him get a job for the Glasgow newspaper, the Citizen. He wrote extensively for several newspapers, becoming a local celebrity for his Rambles Round Glasgow column and eventually becoming literary editor of the Morning Journal. An accomplished writer of prose, poems, and songs, he was also a naturalist and tradesman, and an active Chartist.
