Biographical History
Ernst J. Schlochauer was born on April 3, 1921 in Berlin, Germany. At age 16, he was sent to school in England and in 1939 he and his family immigrated to England. After surviving the London Blitz, he moved to the United States. In 1944, he received his bachelor’s degree from Queens College in Flushing, NY and a doctorate from Princeton in 1948 in literature. Schlochauer specialized in Elizabethan drama, writing on the works of William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, and Henry Chettle. In 1951, Schlochauer became an instructor at Queens College and was promoted to assistant professor in 1955. In 1957, he married his wife, Ursula Smith nee Kantorowicz (daughter of Claire Warschauer). In 1960, he received a fellowship to the Folger Shakespeare Library. Schlochauer passed away from a heart ailment on March 1, 1961.
