Biographical History

The Texas Tech School of Medicine chapter of WA-SAMA (Women's Auxiliary of the Student American Medical Association) was formed in 1972. The chapter was not only the first medical student spouses' organization at Texas Tech, but also the first WA-SAMA chapter in the state of Texas. A group of doctors' wives from the Lubbock-Crosby-Garza medical auxiliary assisted in the formation of the Tech chapter of WA-SAMA.

The organization desired to create channels through which wives of medical students, interns, and residents could serve the medical professional and the community and to create a system of communication whereby local members could be informed of national medical issues. Also, the organization hoped to bring medical students, interns, and residents, and their wives together to promote fellowship and understanding among medical families, and to encourage a closer relationship with the local medical profession and their families for mutual benefits.

From the guide to the Tech Medical Spouse Association, Records, U 203. 1., 1972-1983 and undated, (Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library, Texas Tech University)
