Biographical History

Glasgow University Naval Architecture Society was founded in 1919 for the purpose of promoting the study of naval architecture, by means of lectures, discussions and relevant visits. Honorary Professors included J H Biles , Professor of Naval Architecture. They held annual general meetings (March), annual dinners (January or February) and reunion nights (October). They also had a reading room and held debates. In 1924 it was decided that ladies should be allowed to attend the annual dinners, that lectures would be limited to five per year, and that a book of lecturers' autographs should be kept. It was also decided that former presidents should be made honorary members. In 1926 distinctions were made between student and graduate members. Falling student numbers led to a decline in membership but it was noted that lectures were well attended, particularly by graduate members. In 1928 a meeting was called to discuss the cancelling of the annual dinner that academic year and a motion was put forward to "temporarily wind up" the society. The society was reformed in 1946-1947 as Glasgow University Nautical Society and Professor Robb was its inaugural Honorary President. The last entry of The Glasgow University Nautical Society in the University of Glasgow Student Handbooks was in 1950-1951.
