Biographical History

A curriculum in Mining Engineering (established in 1890) at Penn State became the nucleus of the School of Mines in 1896. Reduced appropriations in 1899 led to the discontinuation of the School of Mines, and transfer of the Department of Mining Engineering to the School of Engineering. Thereafter, its status and name changed several times; it became the School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1906, School of Mines in 1910; reorganization in 1919; School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1923; School of Mineral Industries in 1929; reorganization in 1943; College of Mineral Industries in 1953; reorganization in 1954; College of Earth and Mineral Sciences in 1966. The College mission includes instruction and research in the sciences and engineering involved in exploring and exploiting the earth environment. The work embraces ten subject areas: geography, meteorology, geosciences, mineral economics, mining, petroleum, and natural gas, ceramic science, fuel science, metallurgy, and polymer science.
