Biographical History

Amos N. Wilder was a pastor, poet, teacher, and theologian. He was ordained in 1926 as a Congregational minister, and was the Hollis Professor of Divinity at Harvard University from 1956-1963.

Amos Niven Wilder (1895-1993), was a pastor, poet, teacher, and theologian. Born in Calais, Maine, Wilder was educated at various institutions including Oberlin College (1913-1915), Mansfield College (1921-1923), and Yale Divinity School, where he received his Ph.D. in 1933. Ordained in 1926 as a Congregational minister, he served as pastor of a church in North Conway, New Hampshire. He also taught at Hamilton College, Andover-Newton Theological School, and Chicago Theological Seminary. He first came to Harvard University in 1954 as a New Testament scholar, and was the Hollis Professor of Divinity from 1956-1963. Wilder published several books on religion, poetry, and the arts. His major works include: Battle Retrospect (1923), Eschatology and Ethics in the Teaching of Jesus (1939), Modern Poetry and the Christian Tradition (1951), Otherworldliness and the New Testament (1954), Early Christian Rhetoric (1964), Theopoetic: Theology and the Religious Imagination (1976), Thorton Wilder and His Public (1980), The Bible and the Literary Critic (1991), and Armageddon Revisited: A World War I Journal (1963). He is the elder brother of the writer, Thornton Wilder.
