Biographical History
Juneau Spruce Corporation incorporated under the laws of the Territory of Alaska on April 19, 1947 and began timber and sawmill operations at 496 S. Franklin St., Juneau. Corporate offices were located in Portland, Oregon. In December, the mill closed for renovations and reopened in March of 1948. One month later, April 9, 1948, the ILWU picketed the sawmill. The picket line shut the mill down from April 10, 1948, less than a month after it had reopened, to May 11, 1949. On August 21, 1948, the ILWU was charged with violating the Taft-Hartley Act. They appealed to the Supreme Court but were ordered to pay $750,000.00 in damages to the company. Juneau Spruce Corp. spent more than five years in court trying to collect damages and by the time the check was delivered on June 27, 1955, attorney fees had taken two-thirds. The mill had not operated continuously for six years. On December 19, 1955, Juneau Spruce Corp. filed a Certificate of Final Dissolution and was sold to Juneau Lumber Co.
