Joyce Butler was born in Portland, Me., in 1933. She received her A.B. from Boston University and was a founding member of the Society of Maine Archivists. From 1980-1995, she was Curator of Manuscripts and Exhibitions at the Brick Store Museum, Kennebunk, Me.

In 1959, Grace Dow, a Westbrook College English teacher, and Dorothy Healy, an administrative assistant and a teacher of English literature at Westbrook College, established the Maine Women Writers Collection from the original Westbrook College collection of Maine women writers. The Maine Women Writers Collection at Westbrook College (now the University of New England) consists of published and non-published literary, cultural, and social history sources, by and about women authors, either native or residents of Maine. The collection also contains manuscripts, correspondence, journals, and memorabilia about Maine women. The Collection currently has over 5000 volumes on more than 500 Maine women authors and is housed at Westbrook College Campus at the University of New England in the Abplanalp Library.
