Biographical History
With reorganization of the Department of Health and Social Services (WIHV85-A674) in 1977, the new Division of Economic Assistance assumed responsibility for the financial services programs formerly administered by the Division of Family Services (WIHV85-A358) for dependent children and other economically disadvantaged groups. In 1982, the Division became the Bureau of Economic Assistance (WIHV86-A1508) within the Division of Community Services (WIHV85-A282).
The Division supervised county administration of state and federal public assistance programs (AFDC, refugee programs, eligibility for Medical Assistance, food stamps, and emergency fuel loans) and county child support enforcement agencies. It determined medical eligibility for Wisconsin residents applying for Social Security and Supplement Security Income (SSI) programs and provided financial supplement to the SSI program.
