Biographical History

Blue Shield of New Jersey, a medical insurance plan established in 1942. Originally known as the Medical-Surgical Plan of New Jersey, the organization was founded through the efforts of Dr. Edward W. Spraque, Dr. Elton W. Lance and John S. Thompson, with the support and financial backing of the Medical Society of New Jersey. Blue Shield and Blue Cross (formerly known as the Hospital Service Plan of New Jersey) worked in conjunction, but as separate corporations, until they merged in 1986.
