Biographical History

Born July 2, 1901, Metamora, OH; died May 29, 1970, Chicago, IL. Psychologist. Vincent V. Herr, S.J., received his A.B. and M.A. degress from St. Louis University, after which he studied under Karl Buehler at the University of Vienna, and experimental Psychology at the University of Bonn, Germany. Upon leaving Germany in 1939, Herr joined the Psychology department at Loyola University Chicago where, in addition to teaching, he developed psychological tests that measured visual literacy, cognitive and behavioral aptitude as they related to personality traits, physiological psychology, and associative psychological indices. Among his many projects, he developed a long range word association study called the Loyola Language Study, which was used to determine psychologically normative behaviors. From 1945 to 1968 Herr was the chairman of Loyola University Chicago's Psychology Department, and from 1954 to 1955 he was the president of the American Catholic Psychological Association. Herr authored and contributed to many books on psychology. Father Herr died on May 29, 1970, at the age of 68.
