Biographical History

John Jouett, a close friend of Thomas Jefferson, was the man who warned Jefferson, then governor of Virginia, that he risked capture by Lord Cornwallis' troops as they advanced on Charlottesville in 1781. After the war, Jouett moved to Kentucky, where he was twice elected a delegate to the Virginia General Assembly. His son, Matthew Harris Jouett, became a famous portrait painter in the early nineteenth century.
