British statesman, from Rochdale, Lancashire, England.
John Bright (1811-1889), British reformer, Liberal statesman, free-trade advocate, and one of the most eloquent public speakers of his time, was born near Rochdale, England. A Quaker textile manufacturer, Bright was elected to Parliament in 1843 and formed the Anti-Corn Law League with Richard Cobden to repeal the Corn Laws that imposed duties on imported grain. He criticized the aggressive foreign policy of Lord Palmerston, opposing the Crimean War and colonial expansion, and was active in the movement to extend the franchise.

John Bright, radical British politician. Somewhat of a national hero in his life, Bright, a Quaker, was considered the most effective radical Parliamentary speaker of the Victorian years. He was celebrated by proponents of British liberalism for his nonconformism, his involvement in the Anti-Corn Law League, his opposition to the Crimean War, and his leadership of the reform movement in the mid-1860s.
