The Fourth Baron Rayleigh was born in 1875 and died in 1947. Although his works are largely overshadowed by those of his father, Robert John Strutt was an accomplished physicist who studied many aspects of science and published many of his own scientific papers. Various topics he researched and experimented on include gas phenomena, nitrogen, electric discharge, the sky, emission bands of the mercury spectrum, and light scattering. The "rayleigh", a unit of luminous flux used to measure air glow, and the "rayl', a unit of sound impedence, are named after Robert John Strutt. In addition to his scientific research, the Fourth Baron Rayleigh wrote a biography of his father in 1924 and one of the English physicist J. J. Thomson in 1942.
