Biographical History
American journalist and lecturer.
Born in Illinois, but moved to St. Louis in 1866. He held strong spiritual beliefs and although he believed the Bible to have done more to "promote the higher life guidance of mankind than any other book" and that Jesus had a "transcendent spiritual character" he was against organized religion and doubted the divinity of Jesus Christ. Robert Ingersoll, the son of a Congregationalist minister, was a prominent Illinois lawyer and politician who was also an avowed atheist.
