Biographical History

American musicologist born in 1916, Stein was pianist and conductor who performed widely in Los Angeles during the 1960's. He was an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California and a former head of the Schoenberg Institute.

Leonard Stein was born in 1916. He was a teaching and personal assistant to Arnold Schoenberg from 1939 until Schoenberg's death in 1941. He was also a pianist specializing in contemporary music and Director of the Arnold Schoenberg Institute from 1975 until 1991. Stein died on June 23, 2004, in Burbank, California, at the age of 87.

Stein was educated at UCLA where he obtained degrees in music and served as teaching assistant for Arnold Schoenberg. He has taught at Occidental College, Los Angeles City College, Pomona College, UCLA, Claremont Graduate Schools, and USC. In 1964 he assumed directorship of the Encounters Contemporary Music Series, a series of musical events performed in Los Angeles and co-sponsored by the Pasadena Art Museum, the Coleman Chamber Music Association, the Pasadena Music Teachers' Association, and the Institute Committee on Programs of the California Institute of Technology.
