Biographical History

Organized at Detroit, Michigan, the 1st Michigan Regiment Infantry mustered September 16, 1861. The following is only a partial synopsis of regiment activities.

The regiment served in Maryland until May 1862, then in Virginia for the remainder of 1862, where the 1st Infantry was engaged in several battles, including Mechanicsville (June), Bull Run (August), and Fredericksburg (December). The regiment did return to Maryland briefly in September 1862 for the Maryland Campaign and the Battle of Antietam.

In 1863 the 1st Infantry participated in the Chancellorsville Campaign in Virginia (April-May); the Gettysburg Campaign in Pennsylvania (June-July) and pursuit of Lee to Manassas Gap (July); Bristoe Campaign (Oct.) and Rappahannock (Nov.); and the Mine Run Campaign (Nov.-Dec.).

The Regiment was on duty near Culpeper until May 1864. From there it moved to participate in the Campaign from the Rapidan to the James River (May-June); Battle of the Wilderness (May); Battle of Spottsylvania (May); Jericho Mills (May) and Cold Harbor (June). It was then part of the Siege of Petersburg from June 1864 to April 1865, as well as participating in several other activities throughout the remainder of 1864 and 1865.

The 1st Michigan Regiment Infantry was mustered out on July 9, 1865. According to A Compendium of the War of the Rebellion by Frederick H. Dyer (Broadfoot Publishing Co., Morningside Press, 1994, Vol. 2, p1281) the "[r]egiment lost during service 15 Officers and 172 enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 Officer and 149 Enlisted men by disease. Total 337."
