Steele, John, 1821-1903

John Steele was born in 1821 in Ireland and died in 1903 in Utah. He was an Irish convert to the LDS Church, pioneer to Utah and Nevada, member of the Mormon Battalion, Utah militia office, Mormon missionary, and Utah civic leader. Steele lived in Nauvoo, Illinois; Parowan and Toquerville, Utah; and in Las Vegas, Nevada.

John Steele (1821-) was an Irish convert to the LDS church that immigrated to the United States in 1845.

John Steele was born 21 March 1821 in Hollywood, Ireland, to John and Nancy Steele. In his fifteenth year, Steele began apprenticing as a boot and shoe cobbler, soon opening his own shop in Belfast. John married Catherine Campbell at the age of nineteen. On 10 April 1842, John Steele was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, followed approximately one month later by his wife Catherine. Soon after the death of their infant daughter Margaret, Steele and his wife decided to take their two surviving children and immigrate to the United States.

Upon arriving in New Orleans harbor on 7 March 1845, the Steele family traveled by steam ship up the Mississippi River and joined their fellow Saints in Nauvoo, Illinois. Slightly over one year later, on 4 May 1846, John and his family left Nauvoo, and with other church members, headed for Council Bluffs, Iowa. After serving in the Mormon Militia and traveling throughout the western United States, John Steele and his family, which had grown by that time to include five children, settled in Toquerville, Utah. Up until his death on 31 December 1903, John Steele was an active member of the LDS Church, serving a British Mission in 1877-78, acting as the Bishop of Parowan, Utah, and assisting in the construction of the Manti Temple.

Mahonri M. Steele (1849-1923) was a carpenter and local official in Utah. He served a mission to England and Scotland from 1877 to 1878.

Mahonri Moriancumer Steele was born May 1, 1849 to John Steele and Catherine Campbell Steele in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1877, he was called to serve a mission, with his father, to England and Scotland. After serving for a few months, he returned home due to poor health conditions. He married Emily Bunker on April 19, 1869, and Mary Ellen Jepson in 11 May 1874. He had eleven children. He died September 18, 1923.

He served in the Mormon Battalion during the Mexican-American War. In 1850, he served a mission to Iron County, Utah. In 1855, he served a mission to Las Vegas, Nevada. From 1877 to 1893, he served a mission to England and Scotland with his son, Mahonri Moriancumer. He and his wife had ten children.
