Biographical History

The Henkel family of New Market, Va. was a family of Lutheran clergy, physicians, and printers that included Paul Henkel (1754-1825), Ambrose Henkel (1786-1870), and Socrates Henkel (1823-1901). The Henkel Press, established in 1806, eventually published more Lutheran material than any other press in the country during its time, and also earned fame for its excellent children's books. Although the press began printing in German for the large Shenandoah Valley German community, it also published in English at an early date.
