Biographical History

The National Council for Universal and Unconditional Amnesty acted as a central liaison for more than fifty groups in the United States and abroad working for amnesty for the nearly one million Vietnam War opponents, draft resisters, exiles, and former military personnel with less than honorable discharges. The Council sought a universal amnesty rather than a case-by-case review process. Among its supporters were members of the ACLU, Amex-Canada, Vietnam Veterans Against the War, Winter Soldier Organization, and Women Strike for Peace, to name only a few. The National Council ceased functioning in 1979.
