Biographical History

David McCord Wright was an economist and educator at the University of Georgia.

David McCord Wright (1909-1968) was born in Savannah, Georgia, the son of Anton Pope and Hannah McCord Smythe Wright. He was educated in Savannah public schools, attended the Citadel in Charleston, S.C., and then went to the University of Pennsylvania where he studied architecture. He received his LL.B. (Bachelor of Law degree) at the University of Virginia in 1935 and practiced law in Savannah and Atlanta for a short time. From 1937-1940 he was a graduate student in economics at Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts, receiving his M.A. in 1939 and his Ph.D. in 1940. He was appointed assistant Professor of Business Administration at the University of Virginia in 1939 and served there for thirteen years, becoming Professor of Economics and Lecturer in Law. In 1953 he was invited by Oxford University to become Fulbright lecturer in economics where he remained for two years. In 1955 he was appointed Dow Professor of Economics and Political Science at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He returned to Georgia in 1962 as Professor of Economics at the University of Georgia, serving in that position until his death. He lectured at many colleges and institutions in America, and in Europe in 1956 for the U.S. Department of State. He was the author of books, articles and pamphlets in economics and law. At the time of his death he was Economic Adviser to the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. His wife was Caroline Noble Jones of Savannah, with whom he had two sons and a daughter.
