Biographical History

William A. Sutton, English professor and Republican city councilman, was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on 2 December 1915. His father, Leonard Sutton, emigrated from England in 1911. Dr. Sutton and his wife, Marion, have one son, Robert. In 1936, Sutton received his A.B. degree from Western Reserve University, and went on to attain his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Ohio State University in 1937 and 1943 respectively. Sutton then taught English at his alma mater, Ohio State University, Muskingum College, and the University of Tennessee. Following these teaching assignments, he moved to Muncie to join the faculty of the Ball State English Department starting in 1947. He retired on 24 November 1980. An active member of the First United Presbyterian Church, Sutton helped organize the Delaware County Council of United Church Men. He also was responsible for the formation of the Delaware County Safety Council, on which he served as president for two years. Other aspects of his leadership include service as a member of the Executive Committee of the Delaware Council of the Boy Scouts Association, membership and presidency of the Muncie City Council, service as a precinct committeemen, and chairmanship of the Delaware County Republican Central Committee.
